Why don't birds fart like mammals?
Most familiar flatulence comes from gas produced during digestion, especially when gut microbes ferment food.
Bird digestive systems are built differently. Food often moves through relatively quickly, and the microbial communities in a bird gut are not identical to those in a mammal colon.
That gives gas less opportunity to build up into the sort of noticeable fart we know so well.
There is no need to make birds sound magical. Their plumbing is simply different.
Can a bird physically pass gas?
There is nothing about bird anatomy that creates a perfect one-way barrier against intestinal gas.
If gas were present in the intestine, it could move toward the rear of the digestive tract. The final opening is the cloaca, a chamber shared by the digestive, urinary, and reproductive systems.
What is missing is good evidence that healthy birds regularly produce enough intestinal gas for detectable flatulence to be a normal behaviour.
What is a cloaca?
The cloaca is the common chamber near the end of a bird's body where several systems meet before waste or reproductive material leaves through the vent.
That sounds unusual if you are comparing a bird with a human, but cloacas are common among many vertebrate groups.
Bird droppings pass through there. So do urates. Eggs and sperm use the same general exit route.
One opening. Several jobs.
Is the white part of bird poop gas?
No. It is mostly urates, the concentrated form in which birds get rid of much of their nitrogen waste.
The darker portion is primarily fecal material. The pale portion comes from the urinary side of the system.
It may look strange if you are used to mammals, but there is no bubble of trapped fart hiding in there.

Do birds have gut bacteria?
Absolutely. Birds have communities of bacteria and other microbes living in the digestive system.
The mix depends on species, diet, age, environment, and which part of the gut you look at. Some birds also have enlarged caeca where microbial fermentation is more important.
So "birds don't fart because they have no gut bacteria" is too simple. They do have gut microbes. They just do not seem to produce and release large amounts of flatulence under normal conditions.
Do chickens fart?
Chickens have caeca and active gut microbes, so they are one of the birds people often ask about.
Even then, obvious flatulence is not considered a routine feature of normal chicken digestion. Gas can exist in the digestive tract without being expelled as a noticeable fart.
The same distinction matters for wild birds.
Could a bird fart silently?
Possibly, if a small amount of gas left the intestine without building pressure or making a sound.
That is difficult to prove from casual observation. A tiny amount of gas escaping unnoticed is very different from saying birds commonly fart and we simply fail to hear it.
This is one of those questions where the best answer includes a little uncertainty.
Why do mammal farts smell?
Much of the volume in intestinal gas is odourless. The smell comes from much smaller amounts of sulphur-containing and other compounds produced during digestion.
Animals with long digestive tracts and lots of microbial fermentation can produce plenty of gas along the way.
A small songbird running food through a fast digestive system is playing a different game.
Do birds burp?
There is not much formal evidence for routine bird burping either.
Birds can swallow air, especially during feeding, but they are not generally known for obvious belches. Researchers have spent far more time studying flight, migration, song, reproduction, and digestion than listening for tiny bird burps.
Fair enough, really.
Can a bird make noises from its rear end?
A sound near a bird's vent does not automatically mean flatulence. Movement, droppings, feathers, water, or the bird shifting position can create odd little noises.
Some bird sounds are also surprisingly ventriloquial. A quiet chirp or wing sound may seem to come from somewhere it did not.
Without direct evidence, calling a random noise a fart is mostly a guess.
Does farting help birds stay light for flight?
No good evidence suggests birds evolved "not to fart" as a special weight-saving trick.
Birds have many flight adaptations, including air-filled bones, air sacs, strong muscles, and feathers. Low gas production is better explained by bird digestion and gut microbes than by any special anti-fart adaptation.
