A flock is suddenly higher than you expected. Geese form a V. A hummingbird backs away from a flower without turning around. Flight gives us some of the simplest bird questions, and some of the most surprising answers.

How high can birds fly?

Most bird flight stays far below airliners, but migration can take birds thousands of feet up and a few records go much higher.

How fast can birds fly?

Can birds fly backwards?

Short questions about how a bird's body works

Bird anatomy can look familiar until you get close to it. Then the questions start. Where is the knee? Are the bones really hollow? Can birds taste? And what are those tiny holes near the base of the bill? Even the slightly ridiculous questions can lead somewhere interesting.

Do birds pee?

Yes, but most nitrogen waste leaves as pale urates and is usually released with the darker fecal part of a dropping.

Why is bird poop white?

The pale part is mostly urates from the kidneys, while the darker material is feces from digestion.

Do birds have knees?

They do. The true knee sits high under the feathers, while the obvious backward-looking bend is the ankle region.

Do birds sweat?

No. Birds cool themselves with panting, evaporation, shade, water, and heat loss through bare areas such as bills and feet.

Do birds have tongues?

Yes, and the designs are remarkable. Hummingbirds, woodpeckers, ducks, and parrots all use very different tongues.

Do birds have hollow bones?

Many birds have pneumatic bones with air spaces inside, but not every bone is hollow and the structure is far stronger than it sounds.

Can birds taste?

Yes. Birds have taste buds and receptors, although their taste system is arranged differently from ours and varies by species.

Do birds have noses?

Not a projecting nose like ours, but birds do have nostrils called nares and internal nasal cavities for breathing and smell.

Do birds fart?

Routine bird flatulence is not well documented. Their fast digestion and gut biology do not usually build the same gas loads seen in many mammals.

How do birds breathe?

Birds use rigid lungs and flexible air sacs that keep fresh air moving through the respiratory system very efficiently.

Do birds have belly buttons?

New hatchlings have a tiny navel scar where the embryo connected to the yolk sac, but it soon becomes hard to see.

Do birds sneeze?

Yes. A sneeze can clear dust or irritation from the nasal passages, although repeated sneezing can also accompany respiratory trouble.

Why do birds pant?

Panting moves air across moist respiratory surfaces so evaporation can carry heat away when a bird gets too warm.
