Where did the rice myth come from?
The story is familiar: someone throws uncooked rice at a wedding, birds eat it, the rice swells in their stomachs, and the birds die.
It sounds scientific. It is not.
Cornell's Project FeederWatch has long listed this as a bird-feeding myth. There are also wild birds that eat rice and other grains directly from fields.
Can birds eat uncooked rice?
Yes.
A grain-eating bird has a digestive system built to handle hard foods. Many birds use a muscular gizzard to grind food, and some species swallow grit that helps with that job.
That does not mean every bird wants rice. Bird diets differ enormously. A hawk, hummingbird, chickadee, duck, and goldfinch are all birds, but they do not shop from the same menu.
Can birds eat cooked rice?
Plain cooked rice can also be eaten by many birds.
The bigger concern is what has been added to it. Rice made for people may contain salt, butter, oil, sauces, spices, onion, or other ingredients that do not belong in a wild bird feeding routine.
Cooked rice is also moist. That means it can spoil much faster outdoors than dry seed.
Do wild birds actually eat rice?
Some do.
Rice fields support many kinds of birds. International Rice Research Institute work has pointed out an important detail, though: seeing birds in a rice field does not mean every species there is eating rice. Many are hunting insects, fish, frogs, or other food.
That is a good reminder whenever we talk about "what birds eat." Species matters.
Is rice a good choice for a backyard feeder?
It would not be my first choice.
Rice is mainly a source of carbohydrate. A feeder works better when the food matches the birds you are trying to attract and supplies the energy and nutrients they need.
For many common North American feeder birds, fresh black-oil sunflower seed is a much stronger starting point. Millet can be excellent for ground-feeding sparrows and doves. Nyjer attracts goldfinches and some other finches. Peanuts can bring jays, chickadees, nuthatches, and woodpeckers.

What about throwing rice at weddings?
The bird-stomach story is not a good reason to ban it.
Venues may still have other reasons to avoid rice, including cleanup, slipping, or local rules. But the idea that a few grains of uncooked rice will swell inside a bird and make it explode does not hold up.
Should rice be fed to ducks?
Plain rice is a better question than bread, but I still would not turn a pond into a feeding station.
Waterfowl are best supported by healthy habitat and their natural diet. Feeding large groups in one place can change behaviour, increase crowding, and leave food and droppings behind.
How should cooked rice be offered if you use it?
Keep it plain and keep the amount small.
- No salt or seasoning.
- No butter, oil, or sauce.
- Do not put out moldy or spoiled leftovers.
- Remove wet food before it sits outside long enough to spoil.
- Do not make rice the main food at the feeder.
Frequently asked questions
Does uncooked rice expand in a bird's stomach?
Not in the dramatic way described by the old wedding myth. Birds can digest grains, and rice does not cause their stomachs to burst.
Can sparrows and doves eat rice?
Many seed- and grain-eating birds can eat rice. Whether they choose it depends on the species and what other food is available.
Can birds eat brown rice?
Plain brown rice is not inherently dangerous to birds. As with white rice, it is better treated as an occasional grain than as the main food in a backyard feeder.
Can baby birds eat rice?
