Why do so many baby birds eat insects?
Growing feathers, bones, muscles, and organs takes a lot of protein.
Insects are packed with it.
That is why many familiar songbirds spend the nesting season hunting caterpillars, beetles, flies, spiders, and other small invertebrates for their chicks.
Even species that look like obvious seed eaters as adults may feed their young a much more insect-heavy diet.
Do baby birds eat worms?
Some do.
American Robins are famous for pulling earthworms from lawns, and worms can end up in a nestling's diet. But the cartoon idea that every baby bird waits for a worm is much too simple.
Parents bring whatever nutritious foods fit their species and habitat. Caterpillars are especially important to many nesting songbirds because they are soft, abundant, and rich in protein.
What do baby robins eat?
Young American Robins get a mix of invertebrates, including earthworms and insects.
The adults may make trip after trip to the nest during the day. Raising a nest full of fast-growing chicks is serious work.

What do baby hawks and owls eat?
Meat.
Raptor parents bring prey suited to the species: rodents, birds, insects, reptiles, fish, or other animals. Very young chicks may have food torn into tiny pieces for them.
As the chicks grow, they start pulling prey apart themselves.

What do baby pigeons and doves eat?
This one surprises people.
Pigeons and doves produce a nutrient-rich secretion in the crop that is often called crop milk. Both parents can feed it to their chicks.
It is not mammal milk and does not come from mammary glands. It is a completely different biological system that happens to serve a similar job: giving young animals concentrated nutrition early in life.
Do hummingbird babies drink nectar?
Hummingbird chicks need more than sugar water.
The female brings a mixture that includes nectar and tiny arthropods, giving the young birds both energy and protein for rapid growth.
That is one reason a hummingbird feeder cannot replace the natural insect life around a yard.
Do parent birds feed fledglings?
Very often.
Leaving the nest does not mean a young bird suddenly knows how to find every meal. Many fledglings continue begging and receiving food while they build flight skills and learn where food comes from.
You may see a nearly full-sized youngster flutter its wings and beg from an adult. It can look ridiculous.
It is also normal.
Should I feed a baby bird I found?
Usually, no.
A healthy fledgling on the ground is often still being cared for by its parents. Back away, keep pets indoors or leashed, and give the adults room to return.
If the bird is injured, was caught by a cat, or appears to be a true nestling with no safe way back to the nest, contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.
Start with what to do if you find a baby bird. A healthy fledgling usually needs its parents and space, not food from a person.
Do not pour water into a baby bird's mouth. Do not guess at a diet from the kitchen. Improper feeding can send food or liquid into the lungs and can do more harm than waiting for professional advice.
