Is flying hard work for a bird?
It can be very hard work.
Flapping flight asks a lot from the chest muscles, heart, lungs, and metabolism. Audubon describes flying as the most energy-intensive form of locomotion, even though it can be an efficient way to cover long distances once a bird is built for it.
A short hop from feeder to fence is one thing. Crossing an ocean is another.
How do birds know when to stop and rest?
Birds respond to energy reserves, weather, daylight, habitat, and the demands of the journey.
During migration, many species travel at night and spend daylight feeding and resting. Others move during the day and stop when conditions become poor or when they reach good habitat.
There is no universal schedule. A warbler, goose, hawk, and shorebird all solve the trip differently.
What is a migration stopover?
A stopover is a place where a migrating bird pauses between flights.
It may stay for hours or several days. The bird feeds, rests, drinks, avoids bad weather, and rebuilds fuel before leaving again.
Cornell ornithologists often compare these sites to refuelling stops. For many species, they are essential parts of the route rather than random breaks.
What fuel do birds use for long flights?
Fat is the big one.
Before migration, many birds eat heavily and store far more fat than they carry at other times of year. Fat contains a lot of energy for its weight, which makes it well suited to long-distance flight.
Some long-distance migrants can add a huge percentage of their normal body mass before departure. Then that stored fuel disappears steadily as they fly.
Do birds actually gain weight before migration?
Yes, sometimes dramatically.
Smithsonian describes long-distance songbirds reaching fat loads of 40 to 100 percent of lean body weight before especially demanding flights. Ruby-throated Hummingbirds can also put on substantial fat before crossing the Gulf of Mexico.
That extra weight looks like a disadvantage until you remember what it is: fuel.
Can birds rest while they are still in the air?
Some can reduce their effort considerably.
Hawks, vultures, eagles, and other soaring birds use thermals instead of flapping continuously. They circle upward in rising air, then glide forward. Large waterbirds can also use formation flight to reduce some of the effort for trailing birds.
That is not the same as stopping for a nap, but it lowers the muscular work.
Do tailwinds make birds less tired?
They can.
A favourable wind increases ground speed without requiring the bird to create all of that extra speed itself. Migrants often wait for weather that gives them a better chance of making good progress.
A headwind does the opposite. The bird may burn plenty of energy while covering less ground.
How far can a bird fly without stopping?
The range is enormous.
Most birds never make the extreme journeys that become headlines. Yet some species can stay airborne for days. Cornell points to Bar-tailed Godwits that fly nonstop from Alaska across the Pacific to New Zealand, an extraordinary trip lasting many days.
That does not mean the birds feel no fatigue. It means their bodies and fuel strategy are capable of sustaining a flight that would be impossible for most species.
Do small birds get tired faster than big birds?
Not in any simple way.
Small birds have high metabolic rates, but many are remarkable endurance fliers. Large birds may spend more energy with every wingbeat but can have excellent soaring ability. Wing shape, body mass, metabolism, route, weather, and flight style all matter.
A tiny warbler can cross the Gulf of Mexico. A large Turkey Vulture can travel far while barely flapping. Size alone does not settle it.
Why do birds sometimes sit still after arriving?
They may simply be resting.
A migrant that has just finished a long overnight flight can look quiet, hungry, or unusually tolerant of people nearby. It may spend much of the day feeding and conserving energy before moving on.
If a bird also looks injured, cannot stand, or cannot fly when it should, that is a different situation. Tired and injured are not the same thing.
Do birds sleep during migration?
Many migrants stop and sleep. Some birds can do something even stranger.
Researchers have directly recorded Great Frigatebirds sleeping briefly while flying over the ocean. They slept far less in the air than they did on land, so airborne sleep is not the same as getting a full night's rest.

Can a bird become too exhausted to fly?
Yes.
Severe weather, lack of food, a difficult water crossing, injury, illness, or poor body condition can leave a bird depleted. Migration is risky, and not every bird completes every journey.
That is one reason good stopover habitat matters so much. A patch of insects, berries, seeds, shoreline, or shelter can be the place where a tired migrant rebuilds enough energy to continue.
