Why don't birds have periods?
Their reproductive system is built around laying eggs, not carrying a mammalian pregnancy.
Female birds develop ovarian follicles, ovulate, and move the ovum into an oviduct. Layers are added around it until a complete egg is laid.
There is no regular menstrual shedding of an endometrial lining with bleeding.
So birds absolutely have reproductive hormones and cycles. They just do not have periods.
Do birds have a uterus?
This is where wording can get confusing.
Some avian anatomy texts call the shell-forming region of the oviduct the uterus or shell gland. It is the place where the hard shell spends many hours forming.
That does not make it the same as a mammalian uterus with an endometrium that builds up for pregnancy and is shed during menstruation.
Same word in some anatomy books. Different job.
Do female birds ovulate?
Yes.
Ovulation is the release of a mature ovum from the ovary. In birds, the ovum is associated with the yolk and enters the oviduct after release.
If sperm is present, fertilization can happen near the upper end of the oviduct. Whether fertilized or not, the egg can continue through the egg-forming process.
That is one reason chickens can lay eggs even when no rooster is present.
Is an egg the bird version of a period?
No.
This comparison shows up a lot online because both processes involve ovulation. But they are not the same event.
A bird egg contains an ovum surrounded by yolk, albumen, membranes, and shell. If fertilized, it can support an embryo.
Menstrual fluid is shed tissue and blood from a reproductive lining. A bird egg is not shed lining.
It is an egg. Literally.
Do chickens have periods?

Normal menstruation-style bleeding is not part of a bird's reproductive cycle.
A tiny amount of blood associated with an injury, damaged feather, trauma, or reproductive problem is a different matter. It should not be explained away as a "bird period."
For wild birds, visible bleeding means something happened. It is not a normal monthly cycle.
Do birds go into heat?
Not in exactly the way people use that phrase for dogs or cats.
Wild birds do enter breeding condition. Hormone levels rise, reproductive organs enlarge, courtship increases, and females become capable of ovulation and egg production.
Day length is a major cue for many temperate species. Food, rainfall, temperature, and social signals can matter too.
Calling that a breeding season is usually clearer than calling it a period or heat cycle.
Why do bird reproductive organs change with the seasons?
Carrying large active reproductive organs all year would cost energy and space.
In many wild birds, the ovaries and testes grow dramatically as breeding season approaches and shrink afterward. That matches reproductive effort to the season when raising young has the best chance of succeeding.
A chickadee does not need spring-sized reproductive organs in the middle of a northern winter.
Can birds lay eggs without mating?
Yes.
Ovulation and egg formation can happen without fertilization. The egg will look normal from the outside, but without sperm there is no embryo.
This separates several ideas that people often blend together: ovulation, mating, fertilization, egg laying, and incubation.
They are connected. They are not the same step.
