What happens before birds mate?
Quite a lot, usually.
Bird courtship can include singing, dancing, chasing, food gifts, wing displays, nest building, or simply spending more time close together. A male Northern Cardinal may feed a female. A grouse can turn courtship into a full performance. Some hummingbirds climb high and dive through the air.
Those displays help birds recognize the right species, assess a potential mate, and coordinate breeding at the right time.

The courtship is often the part we notice. The mating itself may be so fast that you miss it.
What is a cloacal kiss?
The phrase sounds more romantic than the mechanics.
The cloaca is an internal chamber that opens to the outside through the vent. During mating in most bird species, the male and female line up their vents and press the cloacal openings together for a moment.
Sperm moves from the male into the female reproductive tract. Fertilization, if it happens, comes later inside the oviduct.
Because the contact is brief, pairs may mate more than once during the breeding period.
Do male birds have penises?
Most do not.
Songbirds, woodpeckers, hummingbirds, raptors, and many other familiar birds transfer sperm by cloacal contact without an external penis.
There are exceptions. Many ducks, geese, swans, and ratites such as ostriches have an intromittent organ. Bird reproduction has one broad plan, but nature has several versions of the equipment.
How does a male bird balance during mating?
Sometimes awkwardly.
In many perching birds the male mounts the female from behind and uses his feet and wings to steady himself. The female shifts her tail to one side, and the male curls his body so the vents can meet.
On a thin branch it can look almost impossible. Yet the contact may last only a moment.
Where does fertilization happen?
Inside the female.
After sperm enters the reproductive tract, it travels up the oviduct. Fertilization occurs near the upper part of the oviduct, around the infundibulum, after an ovum has been released from the ovary.
The rest of the egg is built afterward. Albumen, shell membranes, and the hard shell are added as it moves down the oviduct.

Can female birds store sperm?
Many can.
Specialized sperm-storage tubules in the female reproductive tract can keep sperm viable after mating. The exact storage time varies by species.
This means a female does not necessarily need to mate again immediately before every egg. Sperm from earlier matings can still be available when another ovum is released.
It also explains why mating and egg laying are not always separated by a neat one-day timetable.
Do birds mate for life?
Some pairs stay together for years. Others pair for one breeding season, and some change partners within or between seasons.
Even in species known for long pair bonds, social pairing and genetic parentage are not always the same thing. Bird relationships can be more complicated than the greeting-card version.
So "mate for life" can be true for some individual birds, but it should not be used as a blanket rule for birds in general.
Do birds only mate in spring?
No, although spring is the main breeding season for many birds in Canada and the United States.
Longer days, warmer temperatures, food availability, rainfall, and migration timing can all influence breeding. Desert birds may respond strongly to rain. Tropical species can follow very different calendars.
For a chick to survive, timing matters. The best breeding season is usually the season that gives parents enough food and time to raise young.
Can a female bird lay an egg without mating?
Yes.
Mating is required for fertilization, not for the basic act of forming and laying an egg. A female bird can produce an unfertilized egg when her reproductive system is active.
An unfertilized egg cannot develop into a chick.

How long does bird mating last?
In many species the actual cloacal contact lasts only a few seconds, sometimes less. Courtship and repeated mating can continue much longer.
Do birds have sex organs?
Yes. Males have testes and females have ovaries and an oviduct. Most species do not have obvious external genitalia.
Do birds have to mate for every egg?
Not necessarily. Females of many species can store sperm, allowing eggs laid later to be fertilized without mating immediately before each one.
Does mating mean an egg will hatch?
No. Fertilization has to occur, the embryo must develop normally, and the egg needs suitable incubation. Many eggs in the wild never reach hatching.
