Why don't we call a bird pregnant?
Because the reproductive strategy is different.
Pregnancy usually refers to carrying developing offspring inside the mother's body for an extended period before live birth. Birds are oviparous. They lay eggs.
A female bird does carry a forming egg internally for a while, of course. But once the shell and other layers are complete, the egg leaves the body and development continues outside.
So a bird can be carrying an egg without being "pregnant" in the ordinary biological sense.
Does fertilization happen inside the bird?
Yes.
Most birds mate by briefly bringing their cloacas together. Sperm enters the female reproductive tract and can fertilize an ovum near the upper end of the oviduct.
That makes birds internally fertilizing animals, even though they lay the finished egg outside the body.

What happens after fertilization?
The ovum moves down the oviduct while the rest of the egg is assembled around it.
Albumen is added. Shell membranes form. Then the calcium-rich shell is deposited in the shell gland.
Early cell division can begin before laying, but the long visible period of embryo growth happens after the egg is outside the female and incubation keeps it warm enough.
How long does a bird carry an egg?
There is no one answer for every species.
In chickens and many other birds, the classic egg-formation process takes about a day. Some wild species take longer or have delays at certain stages.
Either way, this is not comparable to months of mammalian gestation. The egg is laid much earlier in development.
That shift from internal development to an external egg is one of the defining features of bird reproduction.
Do birds ever give live birth?
No living bird does.
Every living bird species, from hummingbirds to ostriches, lays eggs. Reptiles include both egg-laying and live-bearing species, but modern birds are entirely egg layers.
That is a striking bit of consistency in a group with more than ten thousand living species.
Can a bird lay an egg without mating?
Yes.
The female reproductive cycle can produce an egg without sperm ever being present. That egg is unfertilized and cannot develop into a chick.
This is easy to see with domestic chickens, but the biology applies more broadly. Egg formation and fertilization are separate events.
So an egg does not automatically mean there was a male nearby.
What is inside a freshly laid fertile egg?
A fertilized reproductive cell has already begun developing by the time the egg is laid.
The yolk stores nutrients. Albumen supplies water and protein. Membranes and shell protect the contents while still allowing gas exchange through tiny pores.
The egg is less like a container with a baby bird inside and more like a complete external life-support package for early development.
Why do birds incubate eggs?
Embryo development needs the right temperature.
Parents transfer body heat to the clutch by sitting over the eggs, often with a bare or sparsely feathered brood patch pressed against them.
Incubation also includes turning eggs in many species and protecting the nest from weather and predators.

Do birds have reproductive cycles?
Absolutely.
Hormones, daylight, weather, food, age, and social cues can all affect breeding readiness. Ovaries and testes change dramatically during the breeding season in many wild birds.
What birds do not have is a mammal-style pregnancy followed by live birth.

Why might someone think a bird is pregnant?
A female close to laying can look a little fuller around the abdomen, spend more time near a nest site, or behave differently as breeding hormones rise.
But appearance alone is unreliable. A fluffed bird can look round for many unrelated reasons, and body shape varies enormously among species.
For wild birds, behaviour around a nest is usually a better clue that breeding is underway than trying to judge whether a female "looks pregnant."
