How do birds sleep without falling?

Many perching birds stay on a branch because tendons in the legs and feet help the toes remain curled as the bird settles its weight. Balance, posture, and choosing the right perch also help.

The grip needs little effort

When many songbirds bend their legs on a perch, tendons running to the toes are pulled and help the toes wrap around the branch. The bird does not need to squeeze consciously through the night.

How the perching grip works

A bird’s toes are connected to muscles higher in the leg by tendons. As a perching bird lowers its body and bends the ankle and knee joints, tension in those tendons helps curl the toes around the perch.
