Where are birds’ ears?
If you look at a chickadee, robin, sparrow, or woodpecker, you won’t see a pair of obvious ears. The openings are hidden beneath feathers on each side of the head.
They are generally located behind and slightly below the eyes. Specialized feathers around this area are often called auriculars or ear coverts. They help protect the opening from dust, insects, and moving air without forming the large external flap that mammals often have.
This hidden design makes sense for an animal that flies. A smooth feathered head creates less drag than a pair of projecting ear flaps.
How do birds hear without outer ear flaps?
Sound waves still reach the ear opening, travel inward, and vibrate the eardrum. Birds have a middle ear and inner ear that transfer those vibrations and turn them into signals the brain can process.
The anatomy isn’t identical to ours. Mammals have three tiny middle-ear bones. Birds use a single main middle-ear bone called the columella. It carries vibrations from the eardrum toward the inner ear.
The result works extremely well. Birds use hearing to recognize songs and calls, keep track of mates and flock members, notice alarms, defend territories, and in some species locate prey.
Can birds hear better than humans?
There isn’t one clean yes-or-no answer. Hearing ranges differ among species, and “better” can mean several things: hearing higher frequencies, detecting quieter sounds, separating one call from background noise, or locating exactly where a sound came from.
Many birds are highly tuned to the sounds that matter in their own lives. A songbird can pick individual voices out of a busy dawn chorus. An owl can locate prey in darkness using tiny differences in when and how loudly a sound reaches each ear.
Humans may hear some frequencies better than a particular bird, while the bird may be far better at interpreting the signals of its own species. Their ears and brains evolved for a different listening job.
Why are bird ears covered with feathers?
The feathers over a bird’s ears are not the same as stuffing a cotton ball into your ear. They are arranged so sound can pass while the opening stays protected.
They can also reduce wind noise. That’s especially important for a flying animal. Imagine trying to listen closely while a constant rush of air passes the side of your head.
On some birds, the feather patch behind the eye is noticeable as a different texture or color. Birders may call this the auricular area even though the actual ear opening remains hidden.
Are owl ear tufts really ears?
No. The pointed feather tufts on a Great Horned Owl, Eastern Screech-Owl, Long-eared Owl, and several other owls are not ears.
The true ear openings are beneath feathers on the sides of the head. Ear tufts may play roles in display, communication, camouflage, or changing the outline of the bird, but they don’t funnel sound the way mammal ears do.
This is one of those bird names that can be misleading. A Long-eared Owl has conspicuous feather tufts, but the “ears” you see aren’t the parts it hears with.
How do owls hear prey in the dark?
Owls combine sensitive hearing with a head shape that helps gather sound. The facial disc on many owls directs sound toward the ear openings.
In some owl species, the two ear openings are not positioned exactly the same way. That asymmetry helps the owl compare the sound reaching each side of its head and estimate the direction of a rustle or squeak with remarkable accuracy.
This is especially valuable when prey is hidden by darkness, grass, leaves, or even snow.
Can birds tell where a sound is coming from?
Yes. Birds don’t need visible ear flaps to locate sound. Their head, feather arrangement, ear openings, and nervous system all contribute.
When you hear a bird calling from thick leaves, it can take you several seconds to find it. The bird has the opposite problem all day long. It needs to know where another bird, predator, mate, or flock member is located even when the caller is out of sight.

Can birds hear people talking?
