Why is this question harder than it sounds?
Because an emotion has two sides.
One side can be observed. A bird freezes when threatened, calls when separated, relaxes in a safe social setting, changes its heart rate, or learns to avoid something frightening.
The other side is private experience.
We know what fear feels like to us because we can describe it. A bird cannot tell a researcher, "I felt anxious for ten minutes after that hawk flew past." Scientists therefore use the term affective state when they want to stay close to what can actually be measured.
Do birds feel fear?
Fear is one of the clearest examples.
Birds respond to predators, threatening places, alarm calls, unfamiliar objects, and previous bad experiences. Those responses can involve freezing, fleeing, mobbing, avoiding a location, changes in calling, or changes in physiology.
Researchers have studied fear and frustration in chickens, pigeons, corvids, songbirds, and other birds.
This is not just us projecting a mood onto a feathered face.
What about positive emotions?
They are harder to study, but the field is growing.
Research on birdsong, reward systems, social behaviour, play, and affiliative contact has pushed scientists to look beyond fear and stress. A 2022 review on birdsong and positive emotion describes neural systems involved in positive affect and reward in birds.
That does not mean a singing bird is "happy" every time it sings. Song can defend territory, attract a mate, maintain social contact, or serve other functions.
Still, the old picture of bird behaviour as purely mechanical no longer holds up very well.
Do bird brains have the machinery for emotion?
Bird brains are built differently from mammal brains, but different does not mean simple.
Birds have neural systems and chemical messengers involved in motivation, fear, reward, social behaviour, and stress. Many of those systems have deep evolutionary roots shared across vertebrates.
The avian brain also supports remarkable memory, planning, problem solving, song learning, social recognition, and flexible behaviour.

Can birds pick up emotions from other birds?
There is evidence for something called emotional contagion.
That means the state of one animal can influence the state or behaviour of another. Reviews of nonhuman animals include examples from pigeons and greylag geese, where birds respond physiologically or behaviourally to social situations involving other birds.
It is tempting to jump straight to empathy.
Slow down there.
Emotional contagion may be one building block of empathy, but empathy is a broader idea involving how an animal represents another individual's state.
Do birds feel love?
"Love" is a difficult scientific word because it carries so much human meaning.
What we can document is strong attachment.
Birds form pair bonds. Parents care intensely for young. Social partners preen, feed, call to, defend, and remain close to one another. Some pair bonds last many years.
Those relationships are biologically important whether we use the word love or not.

Can birds feel stress and frustration?
Yes. These are widely studied in animal welfare and behavioural research.
A bird may react differently when a reward disappears, companions are removed, a threat appears, or its surroundings become unpredictable. Researchers can measure those changes.
Researchers can measure behaviour, hormones, body condition, vocal changes, and other indicators rather than simply deciding that a bird "looks annoyed."
Can birds be curious?
Certainly in the behavioural sense.
Many birds inspect unfamiliar objects, manipulate things, explore new food sources, or learn by watching others. Corvids and parrots are famous for it, but curiosity-like exploration is not limited to those groups.

How can we watch birds without anthropomorphizing them?
Start with what happened.
Instead of saying, "That crow is jealous," note that it displaced another crow from the food, called repeatedly, then stayed close to a particular partner.
Description first. Interpretation second.
That does not make bird watching cold. I think it makes it more interesting, because the behaviour itself becomes the clue.
