How high can birds fly?

Most birds fly much lower than airplanes. During migration, many travel hundreds or thousands of feet above the ground, while a few extreme records reach roughly 37,000 feet.

Most birds fly low, but some go very high

Most everyday bird flight is fairly low. During migration, many birds fly hundreds or thousands of feet above the ground to find good winds and safer routes. A few birds have been recorded much higher. The famous record is around 37,000 feet, but that is an extreme case.

How high do birds normally fly?

Usually, not very high at all.

A chickadee moving between trees may stay only a few metres above the ground. A gull following a shoreline might be higher. Hawks can circle on rising air hundreds or thousands of feet up, yet they may drop close to the ground when hunting.

There is no single normal altitude for birds. A bird flies where the food, terrain, weather, and job take it.

How high do birds fly during migration?

Migration is where bird altitude gets much more interesting.

Radar studies show that a lot of migration takes place within the first few thousand feet above the ground. Cornell's BirdCast analysis found average autumn migration heights around 1,300 to 1,600 feet in parts of the eastern United States, while averages around Washington, Oregon, and California were closer to 2,600 feet. Some birds in those western radar samples flew much higher.

Smithsonian's migratory-bird information gives a similar broad picture. It notes that about three-quarters of migrating songbirds are between roughly 500 and 2,000 feet, although some songbirds, shorebirds, and other migrants can travel far above that.

Those are patterns, not speed limits. A bird can change altitude several times during one night.

Why do migrating birds climb higher?

Wind is a big reason.

The air at 500 feet can be moving differently from the air at 2,000 feet. Birds can climb or descend until they find a layer that gives them a better tailwind or less of a headwind. A good wind can save an enormous amount of energy on a long trip.

Terrain matters too. Mountains, coastlines, storms, temperature, and the distance to the next place to rest can all affect flight height.

Night migrants make this especially easy to miss. You can be asleep while thousands of birds pass overhead and never see one.

What is the highest a bird has ever flown?

The famous record belongs to a Rüppell's griffon vulture.

In 1973, a commercial aircraft struck one over Ivory Coast in West Africa at about 37,000 feet, or 11,300 metres. Feather remains allowed the bird to be identified. Guinness World Records still lists it as the highest recorded bird flight.

Thirty-seven thousand feet is around the cruising altitude of many passenger jets. That's astonishing.

It is also not normal behaviour for most birds, or even for that species. A record tells us what happened once. It doesn't tell us where birds spend most of their lives.

Can birds fly as high as airplanes?

A few can. Most don't.

Commercial airliners often cruise far above the altitude where most bird activity occurs. Even migrating birds are usually well below those heights. Still, aircraft strikes have documented birds at very high altitudes, including the Rüppell's griffon record.

Smithsonian also cites a Mallard struck by an aircraft at about 21,000 feet as a remarkable North American record.

Bird strikes are much more common near airports and lower altitudes because that is where aircraft and birds overlap most often.

Which birds are known for high-altitude flight?

Vultures, geese, swans, shorebirds, and some long-distance songbirds have all produced impressive altitude records or observations.

Bar-headed Geese are famous for crossing the Himalayas. Long-distance shorebirds can also climb high during nonstop travel, especially over water or difficult terrain.

Small birds shouldn't be dismissed. A tiny migrant can be thousands of feet overhead while travelling at night.

How can birds breathe so high up?

Bird lungs work differently from ours.

Air moves through a bird's respiratory system in a highly efficient pattern, supported by air sacs. That system keeps oxygen-rich air moving across the lungs more continuously than the in-and-out flow of mammal lungs.

High-altitude specialists can have additional adaptations that help them cope with thin air. They still face limits, though. Low oxygen, cold temperatures, and the energy needed to climb all make extreme altitude demanding.

Do birds fly higher at night?

Many migratory birds do much of their long-distance travel at night, and they may climb well above the heights we normally see during the day.

Night can bring calmer air, cooler temperatures, and reduced exposure to some daytime predators. It also lets birds spend daylight hours feeding and rebuilding energy.

Do birds always fly at the same altitude?

No. Far from it.

A migrating bird may climb after sunset, level off, change height to find better wind, and descend before dawn. A hawk may rise on a thermal, glide for kilometres, then drop when it reaches another source of rising air.

Even a backyard bird changes altitude constantly. Feeder. Fence. Tree. Rooftop. Gone.

Can weather make birds fly lower?

Yes.

Strong winds, rain, low cloud, fog, and poor flying conditions can change migration height or keep birds grounded altogether. After bad weather, migrants may collect in places where they can rest and feed.

That is one reason bird activity can feel completely different from one morning to the next.

Can you tell how high a bird is from the ground?

Not very accurately by eye.

Without a familiar object nearby for scale, judging altitude is hard. A large bird far away can look like a small bird nearby. Clouds don't help much either because cloud height changes constantly.

Radar, GPS tags, aircraft observations, and other tracking tools give researchers much better measurements than a person looking straight up.
